VEGA to help create and implement a National Space Agency for
Africa
23 May 2011 – VEGA Space Ltd
(VEGA), has signed a contract with the African Union Commission
(AUC) for the provision of consultancy services to carry out a
Feasibility Study on the creation of an African Space Agency.
In 2010, the third conference of
African Ministers in charge of communication and information, made
a common declaration requesting the AUC conduct a feasibility
study, to establish a continental agency and develop an African
Space policy. Following this declaration, the AUC issued an
invitation to tender for the contract which was later awarded to
VEGA.
The study includes an assessment
of Africa's experience with regards the implementation of various
Space activities, a strategic analysis of the existing situation,
identifying challenges and prospects of Space applications on the
African continent, and a benchmarking against other national and
international Space organisations (eg. CNES, DLR, ESA, EUMETSAT).
The findings of this study will help draft the proposal for an
action plan for the effective creation and implementation of the
agency and a draft framework of an African Space policy.
This contract is being carried
out by VEGA’s staff based in both France and Germany, with the
support of external experts who have joined the team.
Peter Young, CEO of VEGA Space
Ltd, said: “VEGA has been involved in many satellite procurement
activities globally and is perceived as a ‘customer friend’ for a
number of non-European organisations. We are delighted to be
involved in the feasibility study of the development of an African
international agency which is testament to our understanding and
experience gained over our 32-year heritage in providing consulting
and technology solutions within the Space industry.”
