Case Studies

These case studies highlight hows Telespazio VEGA has worked closely with its clients across the European Space industry for almost 35 years, and demonstrate the scope of our expertise and experience.

Earth Observation
Information generated from Earth Observation programmes has become increasingly essential for decision making, defining policies, and implementing management strategies to ensure mankind has a sustainable future on Earth.
Instrument Data quality Evaluation and Analysis Service (IDEAS)
The IDEAS consortium, headed by VEGA Space, provides an operational service to monitor the quality of Earth Observation (EO) instrument data from European Space Agency (ESA) satellites and selected third party missions.
Finmeccanica Open Synthetic Terrain Environment (FOSTER)
In the prestigious context of the 48th Paris Air Show (June 2009), Telespazio VEGA created the synthetic environment called FOSTER (Finmeccanica Open Synthetic Terrain Environment) specifically for Finmeccanica.
ADEN: Ground Segment Development
Telespazio VEGA and ESRIN worked together to design and developed ADEN PDS components, and installed them at ESRIN, at an Off-Line Archive Processing (OLAP) Centre and at ground stations in the ADEN region.
ATV – Simulations Development
The Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is one of Europe’s contributions to the International Space Station (ISS). Telespazio VEGA is developing the ATV numerical models for EADS Space Transportation.
Management of the ISIS remote sensing server
The ISIS programme (Incentive for the scientific use of Images from the SPOT system) is an initiative from the French National Space Agency (CNES) and SPOT Image, which intends to optimise access to the SPOT infrastructure by providing SPOT data at preferential rates, with a view to facilitating European space scientific research.

Telespazio VEGA was asked by the Private Finance Initiative's lead banks to participate as the lender’s technical advisor during the Skynet 5 PFI evaluation.
GPU Computing for CNES
Given the rapid increase in computing capabilities of graphics processors (GPU) over the past few years, CNES has entrusted Telespazio VEGA with a study on the use of GPU for the treatment of satellite imagery on the fly.
The Melting Arctic
In recent years scientists have predicted that, due to the combination of summer ice melting, annual decrease in ice extent, and ice pack drift driven by wind and current, there will soon be open water at the North Pole, and in due course the arctic will be nearly completely ice free in the summer.
Venus – Image Ground Segment Development
The French National Spce Agency (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales – CNES) commissioned Telespazio VEGA to undertake the development, assembly, installation, and warranty of the VIP (Venμs Image Processing), which is part of the Venμs Image Ground Segment which is installed and operated from CNES' premises in Toulouse, France.
